Abia Motorists
Committed 1,315
Offences In
June -FRSC
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Abia has said in Umuahia that motorists in the state committed 1,315 traffic offences in June.
The commission's Sector Commander, Mr Gilbert Igbokwe, who told Newsday that 1,215 offenders were booked, noted that some offenders committed more than one offence.
Igbokwe said that out of the figure, 385 persons were apprehended for not using safety belt.
He said that in the five days June 21 to June 25 - set aside by the commission for its Operation Eagle Eye, 187 persons were arrested for violating the seat belt rule.
The sector commander said that during the month, the commission conducted free quarterly checks on vehicles to evaluate their road worthiness.
Igbokwe said the commission observed 853 minor and major faults on the vehicles from the random checks.
He said the vehicle owners were booked and asked to rectify the defects to ensure smooth and safe motoring as well as their lives.
He explained that the booking and issuing of tickets was to ensure that they repaired their vehicles.
Igbokwe, however, appealed to motorists to always co-operate with the commission's road marshals, stressing that “our primary aim is not to fine offenders but to ensure their safety on wheels''.
| Kalu Is Free To Join Any Party - Gov. Orji |
Chief Orji Kalu, former Chairman, PPA Board of Trustee, is free to join any party, according to a statement from Gov. Theodore Orji.
The statement was signed and issued in Umuahia recently on behalf of the governor by his Adviser on Electronic Media, Mr Ugochukwu Emezue.
The statement expressed regret that the former governor was moving back to PDP, when he had earlier vowed not to have anything to do with the party.
“It is very unfortunate that Kalu is abandoning the party he founded for another party,” it said.
The statement made available to Newsday pointed out that “it is surprising to hear that the former governor defected to the PDP”.
It recalled that the former governor accused the ruling party of not practicing internal democracy, pointing out that his return to PDP amounted to “political somersault”
“Is it not the same man that vowed that he will not have anything to do with PDP, let alone returning to the party that has gone to back to the party,'' the statement noted.
According to the statement, the claim by Kalu that PPA is collapsing into PDP due to some circumstance does not hold any water.
“I (Orji) am the only one who can claim to have left PPA due to circumstances, having been pushed to the wall by founders of PPA.
“Kalu should be man enough to tell the people why he is somersaulting with the exit Orji to APGA,” it added.
The statement declared that the exit of the governor from PPA and the sudden collapse of the party showed that Orji remained the live wire of the party in the country. |
