| Congress To Support Jonathan For 2011 |
by Yinka Alege
The congress for equality and change, a body committed to the pursuit of “equality for all” has stated that it would fully support President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2011 presidential elections if he chooses to do so.
The congress observed that “he has no constitutional inhibition and as such cannot be barred by any consideration, including the vexed issue of zoning from contesting”.
Senator Ameh Ebute, the National chairman of the congress told newsmen in Abuja that, “our support is justifiably premised on the special circumstances of the south-south geo-political zone, where president Jonathan comes from, which ecology has been gravely devastated as a result of oil and gas exploration activities for over 50 years; a zone which has never produced a president for Nigeria but contributes over 80% to total federally collectable revenue”.
The chairman of the congress observed further that Nigeria and all its past leaders have been feeding fat on revenue accruing from the oil and gas resources of this deprived minority zone.
He noted that by the history of the long suffering of this region, the congress strongly believe that the circumstances which led to the special consideration of zoning the presidency to the south west zone in 1999 should equally apply to the south-south zone today.
The congress urged President Jonathan to not only ensure the implementation of the justice Uwais report but also the financial independence of INEC to justify his repeated pledge to ensure free, fair and credible elections.
Senator Ebute explained that the primary objective of the congress is therefore to ensure that all disadvantaged groups are accorded equal opportunities and treatment within the Nigerian polity regardless of place of birth, religion and ethnicity. He added that his association is of the stand that all rights and privileges must be dispensed with on the basis of merit rather than preferential consideration.
The Congress National chairman, therefore, called on all Nigerians of various backgrounds and persuasions to join hands with them to immortalize and strengthen the institutionalization of equality and social justice as the criteria for the conduct of affairs in the country. |
