Centre Urges
Transparency
In War Against
Corruption
Mr Auwal Musa, Executive Director, Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), has called on the Federal Government to use transparency and accountability to tackle corruption.
Musamade the call recently in Abuja during an interview with Newsday as part of activities of the agency to mark Nigeria's 51st independence anniversary.
He observed that government had made attempts to reduce the rate of corruption in the past and stressed the need for government to employ measures to tackle the menace.
“It is important for government to use transparency and accountability as leadership tools to tackle corruption in Nigeria.
“It is only right for leaders to take responsibilities for their actions and inaction in the course of carrying out their services as leaders.
“Examining and auditing of past and current leaders should be a culture for promoting transparency and accountability by public office holders,” Musa said.
He said corruption is the abuse of office by people in public office, for private gain.
Musa said the lack of accountability by past Nigerian governments since independence in 1960 had hindered democratic growth and called on the current administration to probe past governments as a way of curbing corruption.
He said the probes would establish the activities of past leaders.
“Leaders who have occupied position of authority in the country should be probed at the end of their tenures,'' he said.
