The Enugu State Government has approved the sum of N329 million for the rehabilitation of potable water scheme at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
The decision to rehabilitate the water scheme is part of the government's contribution towards the successful hosting of the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) next year by the university.
This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Chuks Ugwuoke, while briefing the press after the State Executive Council meeting at the Government House, Enugu.
The commissioner, who was accompanied to the press briefing by the Special Advisers to Governor Chime on Millennium Development Goals and Inter-government Affairs, Messrs Joseph Ajadike and Dennis Agbo, respectively, and the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Mr. Nduka Ikeyi, added that the government would also construct the road from Eha-Alumona to the university town for the same purpose.
The commissioner said the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Chinedu Nebo had expressed happiness for the government's magnanimity and pledged their determination to cooperate with government to accomplish the project.
Furthermore, the commissioner disclosed that the Executive Council also approved over N68 million for the renovation of facilities at the State College of Education Technical, Enugu , in preparation for the accreditation of the programmes of the institution.
He revealed that the National Council of Colleges of Education would soon be visiting the college for the accreditation exercise.
The government spokesman also noted that due process was already in progress for the purchase of security equipments by the State Ministry of Human Development and Poverty Reduction to ensure reduction and eradication of crime in the State.
According to the commissioner, the council frowned at the reported cases of collection of illegal fees by some principals of post primary schools in the State.
The council, according to the commissioner, wondered why despite the free education granted pupils and students from JS1-JS3 in the state, the said principals continued to exploit the students through illegal fees.
The affected principals according to the commissioner were advised to desist from such acts or be brought to book.
During the meeting chaired by the State Governor, Mr. Sullivan Chime, the Council received presentation from Emzor Pharmaceuticals Ltd. for the establishment of a pharmaceutical industry in the state, adding that a proposal for an independent power plant in the state also received the council's consideration.
Before the commencement of the meeting, Governor Sullivan Chime swore in Mr. John Egbo as his Special Adviser on Enugu Capital Development Matters.
