In-line with the adage which says, “All works and no play makes jack a dull boy”, the Honourable minister of women affairs and social Development Mrs. Salamatu Hussaini Suleiman has organised the children's new year party as demonstrated by the convention on the Rights of the child.
The annual party which the ministry organizes she said, is one of the many ways which the government strives to ensure that Nigerian children realizes these rights to leisure, play, recreation and sporting activities as necessary and critical contributors to the child's overall well-being and development.
The minister charged the children present at the party who represent all states of the federation from diverse economic backgrounds regardless of their circumstances, thus facilitating the promotion of integration and non-discrimination among children to “use the opportunity to make new friend, learn about the culture and mode of dressing of other states, share experiences to enhance tolerance and peaceful co-existence”.
Reminding the children of their responsibilities of showing respect to their parents, teachers and elders, Mrs. Suleiman urged the children to contribute to the development of the Nation by helping out with simple home chores and running errands for their parents.
Noting that education is the key to a successful future the amiable minister advised the children to take their education seriously, shin all evil vices such as drug abuse, violence cultism, and other vices, thereby upholding the confidence and trust reposed on them by their parents, elders, and nation at large.
Earlier in his welcome address, the director child development of the ministry said it was in the fulfillment of the Childs right Act, 2003 which ensure that every child is entitled to leisure, recreation and participation that the federal government has continuously demonstrated strong commitment and resolve to improving the quality of life of children at all levels through the formulation implementation of policies and initiatives as well as ratification and domestication of relevant international and Regional conventions protecting them.
There was a lot for the children and their parents to eat and drink coupled with take home gift items such as school bags, lunch box and caps.
The highlight of the occasion was diversity of cultural display by the children representing the 36 states of the federation and FCT, recitation of poem by the Explore club, dancing completion game amongs others.
The minister presented items such as wheel chairs, crutches, Arithmetic frames to some of the students from the school of the Handicapped Kuje and school of the blind, which according to her will add a more meaningful life to them, while special gifts was given to the children whose performance in the quick quize and dancing competition was outstanding.
In an interview with one of the recipient from the school of the blind Jabi Pastor Lucky who received an Arithmetic frame said he is very excited for gift which will aid his reading ability.
he expressed his sincere appreciation to the minister for her love and passion with which she handles all issues concerning children as demonstrated in the hosting of this memorable party.
