GNSS Application Held In Nigeria Tertiary Education
In the commitment to develop and use science and technology for socio-economic transformation in delivery Research, the Global Navigation Satellite System Science (GNSS) organised for Tertiary Education.
The Executive Secretary National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie disclosed this during the workshop organized in Abuja recently.
He stated that NUC had provided the necessary support to fully actualise the new and expansion initiative on collaboration with the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) to enhance science research in Nigeria universities.
According to Okojie, Global Positioning System (GPS) was received by some Nigerian Universities which include the Aeoronomy and Radio-propagation Laboratory of ICTP headed by Prof. Sandro Radicella from Italy.
International Partnership for Satellite Navigation Science and Technology for Africa represented by Patricia Doherty, United State of America, said that their fist workshop was held in March April 2009 in Trieste, Italy. It was attended by nearly 50 Professors and graduate students from African Countries including Nigeria.
She said the broader impacts of this effort are the development of a future knowledgeable GNSS African workforce that is vital for the sustainability of the revolutionary science of and technology.
“ She also emphasized on the building capacity by providing equipment and e-learning activities to program participants which would result in scientific collaborations on the universities level within Africa and with scientific graduate student from the United State and Europe”, Doherty also said.
Prof. JIewa Deni from University of Ilorin said that awareness should be created to the government and academia to work together and make the use of GPS.
Other consolation satellite coming up which has application in communication, deviation and others which is going on round the world, stressing that government and other entire academia should collaborate together to achieve the goals of GNSS in the country.
Deni said that some universities had started hosting equipment donated by the sponsor to do research with GPS.
He also explained that at the end of the conference they would come together and put a framework where we can come together so that those who have the equipment should start a project that would be a basic for detailed expansion.
“we want to see the Network covering the whole Nigeria”, he added.
The Director Research and Innovation Prof. Valentine Ekechukwu said that the essence of this is really on the building capacity of the younger Nigerian Lecturers on the Science Navigation.
He noted that Government is ready to sponsor this in Nigeria as well as being the first African country that initiated it.
He also mentioned that in Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS), most of their works comes from GNSS system which could be extended to security if it can be installed properly. The Road Safety and all manner of security agencies can use it even in the agricultural aspect.
He commented that the technologies are avaliable in the building capacity training also it could be extended because GNS is working in some areas such as in part Abuja, Lagos and Port-Harcourt.
